History and Objectives

History

The importance of the Wireless Communication in Assam was felt in 1944 during the World War-II. In Assam, Police Wireless Communication was born with the establishment of nine HF WT Stations on 12 March 1946 connecting the then State HQ Shillong with the district HQs of Nagaon, Darrang, Goalpara, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar and Cachar as well as Tura and Haflong. After independence, the importance of wireless communication was greatly felt and the communication network was expanded to the present status of long distance R/T Communication on VHF, High Speed Computerised Data Communication Network over HF and VHF and OPNETs.

Objectives

Primary role

To support the law and order enforcing agencies by providing reliable, secure and high speed communication towards effective maintenance of law and order, prevention and detection of crimes and criminals. To provide communication anywhere in the state in matters of public importance and during natural calamities like earthquake, flood, cyclone, etc.

Secondary role

  • To provide communication to other Departments of the Govt of Assam
