History

Assam Police Border Organisation under P.I.P. (Prevention of Infiltration of Pakistani) Scheme was established in 1962, under Special Branch Organisation of Assam Police, headed by the Dy. Inspector General of Police, Special Branch. In 1974, the Organisation started functioning independently as Border Organisation under the newly created post of Dy. Inspector General of Police, (Border). After the liberation war of Bangladesh, the P.I.P. Scheme was renamed as P.I.F. (Prevention of Infiltration of Foreigners) Scheme. In 1985, the head of the organisation was elevated to the rank of Inspector General of Police and in 1997 to Addl. Director General of Police.

At present, the Border Organisation is manned by 4,037 personnel of different ranks. Out of the total strength, 3,153 are sanctioned by the Govt. of India under the P.I.F. Scheme and 884 are sanctioned by the Govt. of Assam. The total strength includes both armed and unarmed personnel.

Objectives and Duties

  • Detection and deportation of illegal foreigners.
  • Prevention of entry of illegal foreigners from across the International Border by maintaining the 2nd Line of Defence along the Indo-Bangla International Border.
  • Joint patrolling with BSF along the Indo-Bangla International Border.
  • Monitoring of developments along the Inter-State Border.
  • Maintenance of law and order, prevention and detection of crimes, detection and deportation of illegal foreigners settled in riverine areas and char areas and trying to infiltrate through riverine routes.
